Michael johnsonFamily Fun Day netted the needy hundreds of pounds of food Saturday with football star Michael Johnson (#90 Cincinnati Bengals defensive end) on hand to thank those who contributed to the project. Fun Day was held at the community college where lunch was served courtesy of Selma’s local Hardees restaurant, faces were painted by Liz Brown and Sandy Greene and Johnson signed autographs.

“This is a great way to spend a summer day with fun and games available for everybody,” said Johnson, who will be heading back to Cincinnati in a couple of weeks to prepare for the upcoming NFL season.

The chief recipient of the program was the Selma Area Food Bank which distributes food to the poor in one of the most depressed areas of Alabama.

Jeff Harrison, executive director of the food bank, said these year’s food donations totaled 529 pounds, easily eclipsing last year’s total of 300 pounds. “We received a wide variety of food and vegetables,” said Harrison. “It will be put to good use for those who need it the most.”

The Postal Food Drive was a huge success, collecting food from all of our neighbors in Dallas County. There is more that will come from Perry, Marengo and Wilcox Counties as well. It all adds up and has certainly started the week off on a very positive note.
